INDOMITABLE! by Margery Leveen Sher tells the stories of thirty-two current asylum-seekers and immigrants to our country. The people whose stories are told came from all over the world. They left their homes to escape danger and persecution, or because the opportunities in their home countries were severely limited. These thirty-two people were chosen not because they are extraordinary, but because they are ordinary…ordinary people reacting to extraordinary circumstances. They came to this country for the opportunity to work hard and re-start their lives.

We see through these stories that people all over the world have the same desires: We all want to provide for our children and give them a good life; we all want to be able to live with dignity; we all want freedom from oppressive governments; and we all want opportunity to make our lives the best we can.

The immigrants were asked to give advice to immigrants who come after them. The advice is remarkably similar; they know that one must be determined, energetic, and resourceful to meet goals. The people in this book show the persistence, spirit, and grit that has always made America great.

In reading these stories, we can wonder how we might have reacted if we found ourselves in their circumstances. We can consider if we really understand how people live in “the opposite of freedom.” We can think about what the stories tell us about ourselves as Americans.  And most importantly, we must reflect upon the impact to people all over the world if the idea and ideals of America are lost.

We are not a perfect country, but we must continue to work toward the American ideal. Here are the thoughts of Zaheer Iqbal:

“America is an idea. It is the culture of tolerance. All different colors and religions can live in coexistence. All can contribute positively. This idea must be a leader in the world. This idea must be preserved. If anything happened to this idea, it would be very bad for the rest of the world.”
